What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a substance that was widely used from the 1950’s right through to the 1980’s as a building material. It was used to such an extent that it can now be found in pretty much any building built before the year 2000. The inhalation of Asbestos fibres can cause life threatening diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer. It is currently the biggest occupational killer in the UK and currently accounts for around 4,000 deaths a year nationwide.
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 came into force on 6 April 2012, updating previous asbestos regulations to take account of the European Commission's view that the UK had not fully implemented the EU Directive.
In practice the changes are fairly limited. They mean that some types of non-licensed work with asbestos now have additional requirements, i.e. notification of work, medical surveillance and record keeping. All other requirements remain unchanged.
FSC1 Ltd can conduct asbestos monitoring and produce a comprehensive assessment of any asbestos containing materials located within your building. We will assist in preparing a plan to manage the risk and put it into effect to ensure that asbestos-containing materials are: kept in good condition, repaired or, if necessary, removed.
